What is 2026 GMI Compliance?

The future’s here. Are you ready?

Electrical RV pedestal

The 2026 Edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) introduces a major safety update for the RV industry: The Grounding Monitor Interrupter (GMI) requirement. All RVs with 30A or 50A electrical service will soon include a GMI, a device that ensures the RV’s electrical connection is properly grounded before power is allowed to flow.

A GMI checks the receptacle for a safe, continuous ground connection and continuously monitors it while the RV is in use. If a ground is lost, the GMI will automatically disconnect power to prevent electrical hazards and protect both guests and property.

The 2026 NEC edition was officially adopted in September 2025, with implementation timelines to be finalized by the RV Industry Association in late 2025.

At Electrical Works, we help park owners and developers understand these new requirements and confirm that every site connection is ready for the transition. Our GMI testing and compliance evaluations give you complete assurance that your systems meet code, operate safely, and keep your park fully powered.

Here’s what you need to know about 2026 GMI Compliance.

What is GMI compliance and why is it being introduced?

GMI stands for Grounding Monitor Interrupter, a new safety requirement included in the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC). The device checks the ground connection between an RV and the electrical pedestal before power is allowed to flow. If a loss of ground is detected, the GMI automatically disconnects power to prevent electrical hazards.

Compliance means ensuring that every RV pedestal and power source in your park provides a proper, continuous ground so the new GMIs installed on RVs can operate correctly. Electrical Works helps you confirm that your infrastructure meets these new safety standards.

Not always. According to the OHI and NEC guidance, if your electrical system was installed correctly under previous NEC editions and includes a proper ground wire from each pedestal to the main source, it should already meet GMI requirements.

Older or improperly wired systems, or those that rely on ground rods alone, will need upgrades to provide a continuous ground connection. Electrical Works performs detailed testing and site evaluations to identify what needs to be updated and to complete all rewiring where required.

The 2026 Edition of the NEC was adopted in September 2025, with the RV Industry Association expected to confirm enforcement timelines in late 2025. New RVs with GMIs will begin appearing in 2026, so park owners should schedule assessments now to avoid delays once those RVs arrive. Electrical Works can test your systems early and make any necessary improvements so you remain operational and compliant well before enforcement begins.

Electrical Works has more than 25 years of experience and has completed over 15,000 RV and MH sites nationwide. Our Vice President and Master Electrician, Tristan Ciceri, represents the Outdoor Hospitality Industry on the NEC Code-Making Panel that developed this update. That expertise gives us unmatched insight into the new requirements and the most efficient path to compliance. From evaluation to installation, we make sure your park is safe, reliable, and ready for 2026.
